The George Washington Carver Agricultural Research Center (GWCARC) is building a stronger local food system in Virginia’s Northern Piedmont; one farm, one food business, and one meal at a time. Our flagship initiative, the Carver Food Enterprise Center, is a shared-use commercial kitchen and food business incubator where farmers, entrepreneurs, and community partners work together to turn great ideas (and great local food) into lasting economic opportunity.
Since opening the kitchen in 2023, the impact has been immediate. We’ve helped start 38 new food businesses, supported dozens more with training and kitchen access, and seen four businesses grow enough to move into their own facilities. Today, 36 businesses operate from our kitchen, creating jobs and keeping food dollars circulating locally.
Our work also helps connect farms and families in meaningful ways. Through our Farm to School efforts, we partner with Virginia Cooperative Extension and local schools to introduce students to fresh, locally grown foods while supporting regional farmers. Since launching the program, we’ve helped prepare thousands of locally sourced servings for school meals, building agricultural literacy and strengthening markets for local producers.
At the same time, our Feeding 500 program transforms rescued produce into nutritious meals for neighbors facing food insecurity. Working alongside volunteers, farmers, and Extension staff, we’ve rescued more than 8,000 pounds of food and prepared over 20,000 servings for our community.
When you give to GWCARC, you’re not just making a donation, you’re investing in local farms, local businesses, local jobs, and a healthier community food system for everyone.
