On Kaua‘i’s North Shore, emergency services are extremely limited: just one fire station, one police station, and two EMS/ambulance units cover the entire region. In a natural disaster or large-scale emergency, professional responders must focus on the most critical needs, leaving residents to care for themselves, their families, and neighbors until help arrives.
Via our NORTH SHORE READY program, North Shore Give is training community volunteers to become the “force multiplier” for professional responders. By strengthening readiness on Kaua‘i’s remote North Shore, NORTH SHORE READY increases community resilience, reduces vulnerability during disasters, and ensures neighbors can support one another until professional help arrives.
DONATE FOR COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS & RESILIENCE
NORTH SHORE READY includes:
At the core of North Shore Ready is the nationally recognized Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. With the support of the Kauai Fire Dept (KFD) and Kauai Emergency Management Agency (KEMA), North Shore Ready offers the CERT 24-hour Basics Training to teach community volunteers: search and rescue, disaster medical triage, fire suppression, damage assessment, and other emergency response skills.
To keep them organized, connected, and ready to respond when needed, the CERT team participates in annual refresher trainings, meet regularly, and participate in quarterly drills with the CERT trailer and ham radios—ensuring communication should internet and cell service fail.
North Shore Ready also expands access to lifesaving skills through certification and non-certification CPR/AED/First Aid classes, making training widely accessible while providing credentials for those who need them.
Community Preparedness Forums with KEMA and other partners deliver practical guidance before disasters strike.
When not formally activated, CERT volunteers also assist visitors by sharing information in the community so visitors know where to go and what to do during emergencies, helping to reduce anxiety as visitors look to keep their families safe.
Donations to North Shore Ready help to pay training instructor fees, as well as field packs and emergency supplies for CERT and community volunteers.
ABOUT NORTH SHORE GIVE
We are a community foundation with a mission to improve life on the North Shore of Kauai.
The area’s very remote setting creates daily challenges in accessing basic services and makes community resilience especially vital. To strengthen well-being and preparedness, North Shore Give focuses on expanding medical services (through our Gift of Health initiative), training residents in disaster preparedness and response (North Shore Ready), and improving access to education.
Beyond this serious mission, North Shore Give also believes in the joy of bringing people together — celebrating health, fun, and community connection through programs like the Ohana FitFest Obstacle Fun Run/Walk, the only leash-free dog park on the North Shore is our North Shore Barkyard, the annual North Shore Give Auction & Gala, and North Shore Give Week. For more information, contact Maylette Garces, North Shore Give executive director, at maylette@northshoregive.org or (808) 240-2670, or visit https://northshoregive.org/.
