The Mission:

Our mission is to work on preserving and promoting the Serbian language, traditions, and cultural heritage in the State of Washinton. We hope to etch Serbian cultural heritage into Seattle’s ethnic scene, and with it, contribute its own traits to the diversity and beauty of our state. We strive to strengthen cultural bonds and promote cross-cultural dialogue through various educational and cultural activities.

The Journey:

The Serbian Cultural Center of Seattle is a newly formed nonprofit, established in September '24. and dedicated to celebrating Serbian culture, language, and traditions.

Our story begins in November '23. when four friends came together and started to work on a screenplay for a potential play. After several months of brainstorming, writing, and developing characters, the story was complete. The next big step was finding actors. After several auditions, we had our cast, and it was time to choose the name: amateur theatre "Srce" (Heart).

As of now, the theatre is run by 40 volunteers, including actors and a production team, who meet and rehearse weekly in preparation for our big premiere at the end of April '25.

But we did not want our hard work to die off once the play was performed!

Recognizing the need for ongoing activities and a dedicated space for creative work within our community, we established the Serbian Cultural Center of Seattle. Today, the Center aims to serve as a cultural hub, bringing together like-minded individuals and supporting a variety of other initiatives.

About the play:

"Sat" (The Pocket Watch) is a historical drama inspired by the true story of Radomir and Julka, a young couple whose lives were profoundly shaped by the turmoils of World War I. Through their journey, the play explores the sufferings of the Serbian people who lost 25% of their total population. Spanning different periods, "Sat "offers an opportunity for reflection, posing thought-provoking questions: How were Serbs shaped by this collective experience? How much of this heritage remains today? What can we learn from the past?

At its core, "Sat" is a story of love, friendship, and survival.

Additional Programs:

Our offerings go beyond theatre to include:

  • Evenings with Literature: Monthly gatherings to explore and discuss works by Serbian authors across genres and eras.
  • Cultural Events: Lectures, workshops, and celebrations highlighting Serbian music, dance, and folklore.
