Every morning in Chaangu, a small farming community in Ghana's Upper West Region, women and children set out to find water.
Some walk 4.5 kilometers (2.7 miles) to the neighboring town of Sankana and carry heavy containers back under the harsh northern sun. Others go to a muddy pond near the village. People and animals drink from the same water, and crocodiles are known to live in it. Families add alum to make the water look clearer, but looking clean doesn't make it safe. Still, for many households, the pond is their only choice.
The people of Chaangu have not given up.
Over the years, the community has watched about ten boreholes dry up as the water table dropped each dry season. So they searched for a better site, and they found one. They drilled a new borehole where water flows all year, even at the height of the dry season.
That borehole is 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) from the village, and the community cannot afford the pipes and materials needed to connect it. The water has been found, but it still doesn't reach the families who need it.
We know this can work.
In March 2026, Bridgeway Foundation's team visited Chaangu to assess the situation and determined that water can be carried directly from the borehole to the community.
The estimated cost for the pipeline and materials is $5,500.
Whether this works is no longer the question. What Chaangu needs now is support.
What your gift will do:
Buy the pipes and materials to connect the year-round borehole to the village.
End the daily 3.5 km (2.1 miles) trips for water and the reliance on a contaminated, dangerous pond.
Protect children from waterborne illness.
Give women and girls back hours of their day to spend on school, work, and rest.
Restore health, dignity, and hope to an entire community
No mother should have to worry about the water she gives her children. No child should risk a crocodile-infested pond for a drink. And no community should be kept from clean water by 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) of pipe.
Please give what you can. Every donation, large or small, brings clean water closer to Chaangu. If you can't give today, please share this story. One share could reach the person who helps finish this project.
Chaangu's people have already done the hard part. Together, we can help them finish it.
