Who We Are

West Valley Humane Society is a private, charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting animals, supporting pet owners, and strengthening the bond between people and pets throughout Canyon County and the surrounding communities.

Our journey began in 2011 following the privatization of the Canyon County Animal Shelter. What started as a local effort to continue providing essential sheltering services has grown into an organization that serves thousands of animals and families each year. Since our founding, we have cared for tens of thousands of domestic animals—including dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, pigs, and many others—each with their own story, needs, and hope for a brighter future.

Every day, our team provides safety and compassionate care to animals who are lost, abandoned, injured, neglected, or surrendered by their families. One of our greatest priorities is helping lost pets return home as quickly as possible. When reunification is not possible, we work to provide each animal with the medical care, rehabilitation, enrichment, and support they need before finding a responsible, loving new home.

Animals adopted from WVHS receive important veterinary care to help prepare them for their next chapter. Dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for parasites, and dewormed before adoption. Some animals arrive needing much more extensive treatment, including emergency surgery, long-term medication, behavioral support, specialized diets, or weeks and even months of recovery. Regardless of how they arrive, every animal is treated as an individual and given the opportunity to heal.

Our work extends beyond the animals living inside our shelter. We provide adoption services, found-animal reclaims, public vaccination and microchipping opportunities, community education, pet-owner resources, and guidance designed to help families care for and keep their pets. By promoting responsible pet ownership and making essential services more accessible, we can help prevent animals from becoming lost, homeless, or surrendered in the first place.

Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals while fostering compassion, promoting responsible pet ownership, educating the community, and ensuring every animal gets a second chance. We envision a community where every pet has a loving home, every lost animal is reunited with their family, and every animal in need receives the care and rehabilitation they deserve.

None of this work is accomplished alone. WVHS is supported by a dedicated team of staff members, volunteers, foster families, adopters, donors, local businesses, and community partners. Volunteers help socialize animals, assist with daily care, support events, provide transportation, and complete countless other important tasks. Foster families open their homes to animals who need additional time, medical recovery, socialization, or a quieter environment outside the shelter.

As a charitable nonprofit, we rely heavily on donations from compassionate community members who believe animals deserve safety, dignity, and second chances. Donations help provide nutritious food, comfortable shelter, lifesaving medical treatment, vaccinations, microchips, enrichment, and the everyday supplies required to care for thousands of animals each year.
