We're on the ground in Wise and Russell Counties in southwestern Virginia as kitten season is in full swing. It's a race against the clock to get these cats spayed and neutered to prevent needless suffering. Thousands of kittens will be born in the next few weeks and our goal is to make that number as small as possible so that fewer kittens are born outdoors where they will not thrive and where caregivers will struggle to afford food for all the new mouths.
Just hours before we arrived at one caregiver's house, one of their cats had given birth to 4 kittens in a dog house. One kitten died shortly after. This is the heartbreaking reality for too many cats, but we're working overtime to change that. Another caregiver just experienced a population explosion over the last 2 months, with three of her cats giving birth to 19 kittens. Many of these kittens have horrible eye infections she's struggling to treat. We're helping her get those kittens care.
Our work in these communities are truly life changing for both the animals and the people who love them. While trapping cats, we met Max, an elderly beagle who is likely enjoying his last few months before he succumbs to a condition that often leaves him short of breath and wobbly. He was rescued by a kind man who just wants to give him the best life he can. While he's an inside dog, Max loves sunbathing so we provided flea and tick preventatives and an outdoor bed so he can soak up the sun in the time he has left in comfort. Max's owner was so touched, he told us, "Well I always heard that some heroes don't wear capes... I guess y'all don't need capes but you are definitely heroes." We're just honored we can help Max and the other animals who need it.
PLEASE help us fund the 56 surgeries for these kitties and any extra care they need.
