CAAS helps local families and individuals achieve financial security while working to eliminate the root causes of economic injustice.
We need your support for our new Emergency Relief Program
Last year the City of Somerville in partnership with United Way of Massachusetts Bay and CAAS, established the Somerville Cares Fund. The fund raised over $1,068,000 in donations. CAAS distributed these funds to over 1,600 households. The Somerville Cares Fund is closed to further donations.
CAAS will start its new Emergency Relief Program to continue providing this vital and essential community need. We still receive applications from those who are underemployed or struggling due to the effects of the pandemic. While CAAS has federal funds available for rental arrears, there remains a significant funding gap for food, utilities, medical expenses, daycare and other necessities. 85% of all funds donated will go directly to households in need; CAAS will retain 15% to fund the administrative costs of operating the fund, reviewing applications for assistance, and distributing the funds.
The need is urgent and we are asking for your help to fund the Emergency Relief Program today. To quote one grant recipient:
βWeβve spent our savings. We donβt have money for food. Theyβre cutting off my phone. Weβre desperate, rent is past due. Income before COVID: $400/week. Income after COVID: $0.β
