Autism Tennessee's Mission & Vision

We bridge the gaps between support, resources, and programs, so Autistic individuals are empowered to recognize their potential and discover the meaningful connections needed to realize their goals.

We envision an interdependent world where diversity is embraced, and Autistic people have opportunities to thrive.

ADVOCATE

We advocate for the needs of Autistic people, their families, and their networks. We amplify the experiences of multiply-marginalized Autistic people by embracing intersectionality and acknowledging the systemic ways oppression excludes many neurodivergent perspectives. Through our long-standing membership with the Tennessee Disability Coalition and our involvement in local, state, and regional councils and committees, AutismTN tracks policy and news concerning disability communities. We are ready to organize and act, when necessary, both locally and nationally.

CELEBRATE

We celebrate Autistic culture by enthusiastically centering Autistic communication, thinking, feeling, and ways of being. We recognize the Autistic neurotype as a natural variation within human neurodiversity. We seek to dismantle long-standing misconceptions about autism that have historically fractured our community - leading to significant unemployment, mental health challenges, and isolation. By fostering an atmosphere of inclusion and belonging, we empower Autistic people to live authentically as respected members of society.

EDUCATE

Every day, we listen and offer community members guidance, resources, and programs because education and belonging lead to empowerment. We recognize the challenges our community faces when accessing neuro-affirming information and valuable opportunities in a world designed without neurodivergent folks and families in mind. In collaboration with the community, we seek to transform these barriers into all-access networks of collective care.
