$10,000 Goal

Cuala Foundation supports communities to recover, repair and build social, economic and cultural power. Our community wealth-building programs celebrate land and community stories, develop new resources and meaningful work, and protect public housing for the generations to come.

We produce projects that share community history and culture and build solidarity such as:

• free community classes in Bomba, the Puerto Rican dance of empowerment and resistance

• Lower East Side Community Folklore Project, a podcast series with public housing residents

• Lower East Side Local Legends, a video series of cultural leaders who lived on the Lower East Side such as James Cagney, Elizabeth Jennings Graham, Yip Harburg, Mabel Lee, Charlie Parker and Ishmael Reed and featuring a podcast with Ishmael Reed.

We are partnered with a local Native American organization to reclaim space for community culture and practice, create meaningful employment through social enterprise and organize for permanently affordable housing, aligned with principles of protection, inclusion and regeneration.
