His Hands Ministries

The mission of His Hands Free Clinic is to bring glory to God by providing for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those without adequate resources.

In 2024 saw 1279 unduplicated patients with nearly 4000 visits

 His Hands provides medical, dental, chiropractic, women’s health, physical therapy, podiatry,  durable medical equipment, spiritual care, patient advocacy /social work services, and prescription assistance. 

His Hands Free Clinic was founded in response to a challenge Dr. James Bell received at a 1991 meeting of the Christian Medical and Dental Society. Inspired to meet the healthcare needs of underserved individuals in Cedar Rapids, Dr. Bell and a group of colleagues opened the Cedar Rapids Free Clinic in May 1992. The clinic grew rapidly, and by 2002, the need for a permanent facility became apparent. During this period, the Board of Directors debated whether to continue as a Christ-centered organization. This led to a split and the formation of two separate clinics: Community Health Free Clinic and His Hands Ministries.

By 2018, His Hands Free Clinic was struggling with limited space. The reception area lacked privacy, exam rooms were too small to accommodate translators or family, and the shared space for chiropractic and physical therapy limited scheduling. Staff were working in overcrowded offices, often bumping into walls or each other.

In the fall of 2019, His Hands purchased the former Wolf Eye Clinic building on 2nd Avenue with the help of a donor-funded loan. Renovations began in 2020, and the clinic moved into its new, spacious, and well-designed facility in July of that year. The current location at 1245 2nd Ave SE allows all services to function effectively. A $1.5 million capital campaign was successfully completed in 2023, raising $1.8 million total. The extra funds allowed the clinic to hire a part-time physician, effectively doubling the number of patients served.
