The individuals we help truly struggle each day with basic expenses. They wake each day knowing that they do not have enough money to meet their daily living expenses and go to sleep hoping that they don't lose what little they do have. They have to make choices between putting gas in their car, or buying food for their young children. Many have suffered catastrophic financial setbacks through no fault of their own due to serious injury, disability, job loss, or loss of a breadwinner through death or divorce. Without starting over debt free, they continue to fall more and more behind and slowly but surely slip into the surly world of poverty. With our help, our clients can start over and begin to rebuild. We not only get them out of debt, but also help them with financial management tools so they can better manage their finances moving forward.
Individuals we've helped include a husband and wife with four children, who have been brought back to court over and over again for payment review hearings on an old rent judgment, requiring them to take valuable time off from work. Another client was a young veteran who after serving several tours in Afghanistan struggled with PTSD and depression, who is now working and getting the help he needs. We recently helped a widowed senior citizen who had difficulty paying for food and medicine. Many are disabled or have suffered devastating, unexpected medical expenses. Some have been victims of domestic violence, have lost their home to foreclosure, or have been living without heat or electricity after the utility company shut them off. All of them were strong enough to take control of their future and work hard so that they can start over.
There are always more people out there suffering in silence and in need of help but are too proud or ashamed to ask for the help they need from their family or friends, but find their way into our offices. Stress is not being able to meet their own needs, but it crosses over into suffering when they cannot meet the basic needs of food, shelter and clothing for their children. As lawyers, we have unique access and insight into the worst aspects of the human condition but are also in the best position to alleviate stress and suffering and restore peace of mind. Together we can change it so everyone has equal access to a fresh financial start.
We at MDRF, with our award winning program, are working to make sure that every person in need of a fresh start can have the same opportunities to rebuild. When basic expenses are unaffordable, paying a lawyer is absolutely impossible. Please consider helping us to make sure that every person in Massachusetts truly in need of pro bono help in discharging debilitating debt to avoid living in poverty can access our life changing resources. We have permanently changed for the better, the lives and futures of generations of our clients. Please help us to continue our mission to make our program available to all who need it.
