In December 2021, Brittany, a PICU nurse, returned to work after a three-month maternity leave. During her second shift at the hospital, she had a liver transplant patient code twice. The shift was so devastating, her mother had to pick her up from work because Brittany was too distraught to drive.
Later that morning, after picking up her newborn son, he became seriously ill. He deteriorated through the course of the day and she immediately took him to the ER for help. After more than ten hours in the ER, she was told her new baby was suffering from a brain bleed. It was later determined the root cause was a rare liver disease called PFIC or Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis.
While her son continues to thrive and meet milestones, his healing journey has been nothing short of twists and turns. He’s had more than 10 procedures, half of them neuro and has almost died twice. The amount of time in the hospital gave his family a firsthand look at the amount of stress healthcare workers face. In addition to trauma on the job, these people go home to deal with personal issues as well.
After months of conversation, in November 2023, Moved by Their Compassion was launched. Although still in its infancy, the goal of the organization is to partner with other local nonprofits to compliment current services being offered to this community of workers. In addition, Moved by Their Compassion is collaborating with nonprofits to offer wellness opportunities such as cooking classes, equine therapy, nature center visits, and yoga to name a few. While the goal is to have a brick and mortar presence near the Cincinnati hospital district, for now, Moved by Their Compassion will take its efforts to the people.
By prioritizing the mental health and overall well-being of healthcare workers and first responders, we recognize their immense dedication, sacrifice, and tireless efforts in providing essential care to our communities.
