Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing

A nonprofit organization

Dear SABEW Friends,

If you’re like me, you are enjoying the apparent return to something like normalcy after years of pandemic-induced deprivation. The recent opportunities to reconnect in person with many of you have been incredibly heartwarming.

I’m thinking of last month’s Skill Up @ SABEW sessions, a new training program we launched that brought together some of the brightest stars in business news to share their secrets of success at The Wall Street Journal’s New York headquarters. We also hosted the Goldschmidt data fellows for a week in Washington D.C. and at the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank for the first time since the pandemic.

And who could forget the wonderful spring conference hosted by Dotdash Meredith, whose sponsorship enabled SABEW to hold its first in-person conference and Best in Business Award ceremony since 2019? Our colleagues in Canada also revived their BiB celebration in Toronto.

More than 3,700 journalists participated in SABEW programs and awards competitions this year. We also helped women and journalists of color advance their careers through the Xana Fellowship and the Sho Fund.

I’m proud of the way we all looked out for each other amid the adversity of the past few years. You stuck with SABEW every step of the way, and SABEW stood by you, pivoting into virtual conferences, new forms of training and finding ways to keep providing the mutual support that makes our organization like part of our extended families.

Now, just as many of us started feeling like we survived Covid-19, we face a new threat. The global economic headwinds amid an energy and food crisis precipitated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The war quickly overtook COVID-19 as the biggest business story in the world, and your SABEW support system is fully deployed to help you weather this news storm – like we always do. This new global malaise also creates fresh challenges for SABEW, and we need you to stand by us again - like you always do.

On behalf of Executive Director Kathleen Graham and myself, I ask you to consider a year-end, tax-deductible donation. You can do so through SABEW’s secure site or by mailing a check to SABEW, P.O. Box 4, Fountainville, PA 18923. (Please note, we are headquartered at ASU’s Cronkite School but a P.O. Box was set up during the pandemic).

If your company matches charitable contributions, please also apply for the match. We love matching donations! Thank you for your support, membership and generosity.

We wish you a healthy and happy holiday season!

Sincerely,

Glenn Hall                                                    Kathleen Graham
