Mission:

To offer a quality Montessori education infused with culturally inclusive principles to guide children to develop to their fullest potential. In keeping with its mission, Shining Stars strives to nurture the genius of all children who come through its doors, guiding them in the principles of the Montessori approach.

As you approach our school located at the intersection of 13th and Randolph Streets in the northeast sector of the District of Columbia, you are greeted by a historic scarlet oak tree and out-door mailbox for neighborhood book exchanges. Our three-story building is the result of multiple temporary sites and a successful  aggressive search for a permanent home.

A Glimpse of a School Day

Walk through our doors and your senses tingle as you see and hear young scholars PK3 to 6th Grade engrossed in learning: six hours a day, not including before and extended day learning, 180 days per year. 

Staffed with a guide/teacher and assistant in each class, the school day begins with breakfast for all and community meeting time, followed by comprehensive academic studies in multi-age classrooms with uninterrupted work cycles aligned with common core standards, using Montessori manipulatives, computer-based Eureka and Amplify academic platforms, push-in and pull-out services as needed in the least restricted environment, physical education, and specials in music and STEM.  

In addition, Shining Stars has perimeter gardens and a student-designed playspace made possible by corporate partnerships, and an atrium with Peace Pole, benches and space for games and  quiet reflection. 

Accomplishments:

In 2025, Shining Stars proudly celebrates 15 years of educating children in the nation’s capital.  We average 200 students annually who travel from all across the city to attend our single site charter school.  We can proudly say that we are re-bounding from a difficult couple of years, as are many schools nation-wide, that have been recovering from the COVID Pandemic and dips in attendance and standardized test scores. 

Turnaround has been the result of in-depth analysis of academic and operations, professional development, curriculum mapping and benchmarking,  coaching, goal-setting and lots of hard work. As a result, in 6-months, we doubled our academic performance over the previous year in Reading and are well on our way to doing the same in math.  We have consistently achieved a 99–100% promotion and graduation rates, 0% expulsions, and strengthened outcomes for at-risk students and re-engaged families in in-school volunteer activities.  And we can proudly announce that we earned re-accreditation from The MIddle States Commission on Colleges and Elementary Schools for the next seven years.
