Our Services: Neighbors Helping Neighbors
At Staying Put, our mission is helping seniors and adults with disabilities “Stay Put” in their homes, honoring our rural tradition of neighbors helping neighbors. Since 2015, volunteers have provided free non-medical assistance to residents of the Spring Valley and Elmwood WI School District areas of the Red Cedar and St. Croix Valleys.

Last year, Staying Put volunteers drove over 49,593 total miles — nearly twice around the globe, demonstrating incredible commitment!  We currently coordinate 141 volunteers to serve 204 clients with:

  • Transportation to medical appointments, physical therapy, groceries, banking, prescriptions, library, and events that reduce social isolation

  • Nutritious Food: Meals on Wheels lunch delivery; Coffee Klatch, weekly Neighbor's Lunch

  • Social Connections: Spring Valley Memory Café, Elmwood Coffee & Conversation; crafts, games, birthday and holiday parties

  • Physical Wellness: Strong Bodies twice weekly exercise classes, Walking Buddies; and Foot Care clinics twice a month

  • Events & Outings: Community Dances, Fish Fry, a Block Party, Caregiver Appreciation night, Volunteer Open House, TriShaw rides for seniors and adults with disabilities for outdoor experiences; Expanding Horizons visits for birdwatching, orchard tours, flower garden teas, Tales of Quails, cultural events, and more

  • Support & Companionship: Caregiver breaks, therapy dog visits, friendly visits

  • Home and Tech Help: Light repairs, yard work, pet care, tech device assistance

  • AARP HomeFit:  Evaluations to install non-slip strips, grab bars, and basic accessibility improvements

  • Resource Referrals: Connections to local Aging & Disability Resource Centers and professional services

  • and more!  See photos below in the Media Gallery

Staying Put exists because of people like you: volunteers, donors, and community members who believe in helping neighbors. We are thankful for volunteers who tirelessly drive, visit, clean, repair, socialize, and support our mission. As a donor-funded non-profit, we are grateful for donors whose gifts directly help area seniors live independently, safely, and happily at home.

Bob & Sally’s Story

Bob Sebion remembers the comfort and support Staying Put gave him after his wife Dorothy passed: “Staying Put helped me get through that sad time.” In 2025, Bob and Sally continue benefiting: “Our HomeFit evaluation and house improvements—like non-slip shower strips, kitchen handles, and an extra stair railing—make living here safe. SP is amazing! The WESTconsin CU volunteers even cleaned our siding until it looked brand new and got our TV working again.”

Both Bob and Sally deeply appreciate the friends and neighbors they meet at Staying Put events, from the 10th Anniversary Open House to special gatherings. Bob shares: “It’s heartwarming to see everyone—SP is a wonderful addition to Spring Valley, a real blessing!” Sally calls Staying Put her lifeline as a caregiver: “I’ve met caring, compassionate people and found new friends at SP activities like the Death Doula discussion. From little things to a listening ear at the office, Staying Put makes a difference. Thank you for all you do!”

$25 helps provide treats and conversation at social events like Coffee Hours and Memory Café.

$100 reimburses volunteer drivers' mileage for longer trips to medical appointments as rural clinics close or relocate.

$1,000 grows our preparedness for changing needs, so Staying Put can flexibly respond to new challenges in our rural area.
