Who We Are

Established in 1952, The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) is the largest chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA). We use our unique position in the National Capital area to educate and advocate communities about the important work of the United Nations.

Serving the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, UNA-NCA strives to:

  •  Increase public understanding and support of the United Nations.
  •  Encourage constructive US leadership in strengthening the United Nations.
  •  Prepare present and future leaders to work for a better world, both globally and locally.

What We Do

EducationThe 2017-2018 Global Classrooms DC Annual Report

Our flagship program is Global Classrooms DC (GCDC). The program, serving students in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia,  provides a quality global education curriculum, exhibited through our students' outstanding performances at the annual Model United Nations Conference, held at the Department of State and Pan American Health Organization. The UN Model Conference is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Your financial contribution will sponsor at-risk youth students, affording them an opportunity to receive a hands on learning experience.

Programs

Our organization is led mainly by volunteers just like you, who head a number of Committees. These committees organize educational events which cover a number of topics, falling under the categories of African affairs, CEDAW, human rights, international law, peace and security, and sustainable development. Additionally, our Young Professionals (UNA-NCA YP) program is a great place to gain career experience and connect with others in the industry. You can click here to see some of the amazing programs we have coming up this fall!

Advocacy

We have recently expanded our advocacy efforts with the appointment of a new VP for Advocacy, Ellen McGovern, and a new staff member to support Advocacy efforts. We meet with members of Congress and their staff to push for the ratification of essential treaties and resolutions. Our advocacy efforts focus on increasing government support for peacekeeping and assistance related to the UN's Millennium Development Goals.

Outreach

We provide workshops, conferences, and seminars on the United Nations and related foreign policy issues. Our e-newsletter, UN Express, sends you exclusive and advance email notification of important international affairs events sponsored by the UNA-NCA.
