UpsideDown Moments is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Loudoun County, Virginia, dedicated to transforming moments of crisis and uncertainty into opportunities for hope and stability for children and youth impacted by foster care and at-risk youth. We exist to meet the tangible, emotional, and transitional needs of children entering care and those who have aged out—youth who too often navigate adulthood alone, without the family support or safety net that most of us take for granted. We also meet the needs of a child, whose family is experiencing financial insecurity.
When a child enters foster care, it is often in the midst of trauma and confusion—removed suddenly from their home with little notice and often without any personal belongings. To ease this overwhelming fear and uncertainty, UpsideDown Moments provides “First Night Bags”, thoughtfully filled with comforting essentials such as hygiene items, pajamas, a blanket, and small personal touches that offer immediate reassurance and dignity in those first moments of transition.
Our work continues far beyond that first night. Through our Back-to-School (B2S) Boutique, children in foster care and aged-out youth shop for brand-new clothing, shoes, and school supplies in a boutique-style setting designed to restore confidence and excitement for the school year ahead. (In 2025 we assisted over 100 kids) Our Seasonal Blessings Program ensures that every child has access to weather-appropriate essentials—weather appropriate clothes, blankets, and hygiene kits—so that no youth has to face harsh seasons unprepared. (in 2025 we assisted over 525 kids).
We also celebrate joy through our Super Saturday Celebrations, parties at the homeless shelters for children calling it home for awhile. Together we provide laughter, games, and shared experiences that build connection and belonging. For older youth transitioning into independent living, our Move-In Program provides household essentials and furnishings and pantry stocking to create a sense of home, stability, and pride as they take their first steps into adulthood (since interception in 2024, we have assisted 14 young adults).
Recognizing that transportation is a major barrier for aged-out youth, we launched Vehicles Empowering Hope (VEH)—a program that provides gas cards, oil changes, car repairs, insurance payments, uber gift cards, to young adults in need, paired with budgeting and maintenance workshops to promote long-term self-sufficiency and success. In 2025 we have assisted 13 young adults for a total of over $10,000. In 2026 we are introducing The Readiness Project, which provides hands-on guidance and education to help youth prepare for independence. This includes workshops on financial literacy, goal setting, employment readiness, and mental wellness—empowering them to build the confidence and skills needed to thrive.
The population we serve includes children from infancy through young adulthood (ages 0–24) in foster care or recently aged out, primarily in Loudoun County and surrounding Northern Virginia areas. Many of these youth have experienced trauma, instability, and loss; over 80% enter care with little to no belongings, and aged-out youth face disproportionate risks of homelessness, unemployment, and mental health struggles.
UpsideDown Moments focuses on meeting both immediate and long-term needs—restoring dignity, stability, and hope one moment at a time. By surrounding youth with practical resources, encouragement, and community connection, we help them not only survive the challenges of foster care but begin to imagine and pursue brighter futures. Our impact is measured in smiles, restored confidence, and the growing number of youth who can say they no longer face life’s hardest moments alone.
