New Conservatory Theatre Center (NCTC) has been a voice for the queer and allied communities since 1981, entertaining diverse audiences and fostering cross-cultural understanding.  In a regular season, NCTC stages seven shows, ranging in scope from world premieres and experimental work to musicals, revivals, and classic works from the queer canon. 

NCTC provides the San Francisco community with high-quality youth education programming, Queer & Allied theatre, children’s theatre, and new work commissions. NCTC’s annual operating budget is approximately 2 million.

NCTC is a creative hub for the queer community, an incubator for new works and emerging artists, and a center of innovative arts education and outreach for youth. Through our artistic and educational programs, NCTC inspires and leads the conversation and informs the community of important issues affecting the queer community and its allies. 

Still led by our Founding Artistic Director, Ed Decker, NCTC is a center for exploring and developing work that engages, challenges, and captivates.

We are a voice of and a welcoming home for the entire queer community. 

Our mission is to champion innovative, high-quality productions & educational theatre experiences for youth, artists, and the queer & allied communities to effect personal & societal growth, enlightenment, and change.

Our vision is that theatre is a community event and a way to build community.

There are three primary programs at New Conservatory Theatre Center with the following missions and central aims:

1. MAINSTAGE SEASON

NCTC's Mainstage has been a voice for the queer and allied communities for decades, entertaining diverse audiences and fostering cross-cultural understanding. In a regular season, NCTC stages seven shows, ranging in scope from world premieres and experimental work to musicals, revivals, and classic works from the queer canon.


2. EDUCATION
NCTC education programs develops and directs theatre education through classes, camps, performances, and touring productions to empower youth to express themselves, celebrate differences, and gain self-esteem.


YOUTH CONSERVATORY provides is an innovative touring program that uses a theatre- in-education model to present age-appropriate theatre productions that raise awareness around issues such as bullying, cyberbullying, identity, discrimination, social media addiction, homophobia, and HIV/AIDS to students in grades K–12. Since its inception, this program has touched more than 650,000 lives. classes, camps, and workshops to K–12 students throughout the year at NCTC’s Civic Center complex.

YOUTHAWARE HEALTH & WELLNESS EDUCATION is an innovative touring program that uses a theatre- in-education model to present age-appropriate theatre productions that raise awareness around issues such as bullying, cyberbullying, identity, discrimination, social media addiction, homophobia, and HIV/AIDS to students in grades K–12. Since its inception, this program has touched more than 650,000 lives.

SATELLITE DRAMA EDUCATION PROGRAM brings theatre education residencies to K–8 students who attend San Francisco afterschool and community-based programs.


3. NEW VOICES / NEW WORK:

New Voices/New Work is a thriving pipeline of new works aimed at cultivating exciting new voices from across the LGBTQIA+ universe and has resulted in NCTC producing twelve world premieres since 2014. Youth Conservatory provides classes, camps, and workshops to K–12 students throughout the year at NCTC’s Civic Center complex.
