Hello, our names are Wilma Hoenes and Jordan Edwards. We are proud volunteers at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas and honored to serve as North Texas Giving Day ambassadors. We’ve seen firsthand the impact philanthropy makes at Texas Health Dallas—and it’s why we give our time and support.
Wilma’s story: During my adult life I have had the awesome opportunity to teach in a variety of places such as Haiti, Senegal and China. As I worked overseas, I was inspired by the people around me as they tried their best to do whatever they could to learn and prosper in their homes and communities.
I knew about the quality care here at Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas, because my sister, Flo Shaffer, was a nurse here. She cared dearly for this hospital and gave her all to the various responsibilities she had here and was a constant inspiration to all her colleagues as well as to me.
When I retired, I moved to Dallas to be near my sister and her family. One of the first things I did was to apply to volunteer at the Presbyterian Hospital. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to help people here at the hospital for the past eleven years and look forward to many more years of service helping the guests at the hospital.
Jordan’s story: I am in my 4th year at Southern Methodist University. I am part of the Students Engaged in Rounding and Volunteering (SERV) program at Texas Health Dallas, where I have had the opportunity to volunteer and shadow across different specialties. Helping others has always held a special place in my heart, and volunteering here has been a way for me to give back to the medical community that has supported me through my own medical history.
As someone who has dealt with ongoing foot pain for the last eight years, I know what it feels like to be on the patient side of care about the waiting, and the uncertainty. This perspective has shaped the way I approach volunteering specifically in the emergency room, where I have volunteered most in the hospital.
