The 21st Annual Cycle Across Illinois benefiting Illinois Concerns of Police Survivors (IL COPS) will begin in Champaign, IL on Thursday, July 10 and conclude in Chicago, IL on Sunday July 13. Over the course of the four days, we will ride over 300 miles.
Cycle Across Illinois was started in 2005 as a way to remember our fallen heroes and to raise funds to assist their families in their healing process. This July, I will embark on my fifth ride across Illinois, alongside surviving families, friends, and co-workers. The goal is to bring awareness and funds to families who have lost their officer in the line of duty.
On May 19, 2021, in my 9th year of law enforcement, I was called into work as a detective, for an officer involved shooting. I was quickly informed two of our officers had been shot and were at the hospital. A short time after I arrived on scene, I was informed Chris Oberheim #703 did not survive. I believe the earth stood still in that moment.
This incident has had a profound impact on my life and my department. The COPS organization showed up, for me, for my department, and for Chris' family. They have been there for all of us since. Supporting, loving, and listening. They have become an extended family.
I have seen firsthand what COPS does for the families and for the departments of those lost in the line of duty. I know what change and support they provide. I believe in this organization and am honored to serve them, dedicate time to this ride, and raise money while bringing awareness of their efforts.
Together we will:
-Honor our Heros
-Remember the Fallen
-Support their Families
Thank you, Kaitlin
