Alonzo Portillo is awaiting a new lease on life. In January of 2019, he was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease. His diagnosis came as a shock, as there is no family history of kidney disease and he had been previously healthy. Alonzo is now on dialysis, which leaves him tired and affects his quality of life. Doctors say a kidney transplant is necessary.
During this difficult time, Alonzo is thankful for the love and support of his family and friends. He is close to his family, especially his niece and nephew, and his illness has caused a lot of worry for his loved ones. Alonzo enjoys playing music, hiking, camping, and traveling with his siblings, but his activities are now limited by his dialysis schedule. He looks forward to receiving a transplant that will free him from dialysis and give him back his energy. Alonzo wants nothing more than to be healthy so he can live his life to the fullest, travel, play music, and start a family of his own. But right now, he needs your help.
The average kidney transplant costs more than $414,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.Alonzo used to have a successful software consulting company, but his hospitalizations and lack of energy forced him to give up running his own business and go to work for someone else. When he receives his transplant, he will have to be off work for an extended time, further adding to his financial burdens.
