Dear BAA Family:
It was fun being one of the young guys in the environmental movement for quite some time, but today I turned 60. I guess that makes me a young elder.
Life is fleeting, so we owe it to ourselves to make the most of our relatively brief time as cognizant participants in Mother Earth. I’m grateful for what Bay Area Action provided me on my journey. We accomplished a lot of meaningful work!
We helped preserve ancient forests, stop nuclear testing, protect and restore creeks and open spaces, and engage communities in a wide variety of activities — community organic gardening, electric vehicle conversions, environmentally-responsible consumption, and so much more. We educated, demonstrated and entertained. Perhaps most importantly, we helped empower the next wave of environmental leaders.
And let’s not forget the community we built, including a dozen marriages. To this day, many of my best friends are people I met through BAA.
We grew out of the international Earth Day 1990 campaign headquartered in downtown Palo Alto. Earth Day was intense, and many of those who were involved felt burnt out and needed time off to recuperate. But we understood that April 22 wasn't the end of a project, but for most people the beginning of a journey. BAA was founded on the premise that everyone has a role to play in environmental solutions, not just for one day, but throughout our lives.
To preserve BAA's legacy and inspire others to take action and become leaders, I’ve set a birthday goal of raising $10,000 for the BAA History Project spearheaded by Mark Bult. Will you join me?
Mark has already put a tremendous amount of work into this project, but there’s still much more to do. Most of his time has been volunteered (just like the good old days), but he can’t continue without support from the rest of us. lease think about the role BAA played in your life and make as generous of a contribution as you can.
Thank you for being such an integral part of my journey. I look forward to our next phase as emerging elders!
– Peter
