$2,700 goal

We need your help in raising $2,700 to fund a new yoga4cancer class in Brooklyn. We have already received a generous contribution from Susan G Komen foundation but your support is needed.

Our cancer community has long requested this class as the time & complexity required to traveling into our Manhattan based classes. Travel and weather are often a barrier for cancer survivors to attend a yoga class or just leave the house; we are removing that barrier and will be able to help hundreds of more cancer survivors in Brooklyn.

The funding will help cover the below costs to deliver the program for 1 year in Brooklyn  - at Park Slope Yoga Center - starting on January 9th.

Why Yoga?

  • 40% of the world’s population will face cancer in their lifetime. Most will not die, but they still face the short and long-term side effects of cancer and treatment.
  • Cancer Survivorship is focused on providing the necessary support, research and guidance to help cancer survivors reduce physiological and psychological side effects, reduce chances of cancer recurrence, and ultimately enable a survivor to live a long, normal and healthy life. American Cancer Society has recommended a minimum of 150 mins of moderate exercise per week and yoga was suggested.
  • Yoga has been proven to be an effective tool in survivorship that is also affordable and accessible.  Research indicates that yoga can help reduce side effects such as anxiety, scar tissue, lymphedema and weight gain.  Plus, as it can be safely and cost effective compared to other forms of exercise, it is also an excellent tool for cancer survivors and their medical & wellness team.
  • Doctors, nurses and other medical professionals are increasingly recommending yoga to cancer survivors but are not clear which type of yoga is best. They need further clarity and support on why and how yoga should be prescribed to survivors.
  • Cancer mortality rates is strongly linked to access to quality healthcare.  Additionally, a cancer diagnosis usually comes with negative financial impacts due to the cost of healthcare, drugs, loss of income and other secondary issues. We must improve the quality of support for those that need it the most based on geographical and demographic distributions. This can be accomplished by providing access to free yoga for cancer classes.
  • yoga4cancer and the Retreat Project have been serving cancer survivors for over 15 years across the globe and have helped tens of thousands on their path to recovery.  New York City has always been the heart of both organizations and offers ongoing classes to survivors in yoga studios and hospitals. Currently y4c offers 4 classes in NYC.
