Thank you for your support of our Hands to Hearts Buddies project!
This project repurposes some of the thousands of thin, stretchy dollar store gloves that are donated to Mittens for Detroit ~ pairs that are inappropriate for our frigid Detroit. More than 22,000 pairs of these gloves are in our office as we start our 17th Season of Warmth. While many of these pairs are boxed up to be donated in Bonus Boxes to the schools that we serve, so many more sit unused in the sorting boxes. In October 2025, we came up with the idea to repurpose these pairs into something useful that could generate funds for us to use for new, warm, durable pairs for kids. When we saw a YouTube video (Youtube.com/@moth_art) showing how to create critters out of dollar store gloves, we knew we found another answer!
These are made by amazing volunteers – some prep the gloves for the finishing steps, others do the hand- and machine-sewing, and some do all of the steps! (There are 31 steps in making one of these little bears!) Once again, the support of the community is helping Mittens for Detroit warm the hearts and hands of people in need in Detroit. And now YOU

The volunteer doll makers create adorable little one-of-a-kind bears for adults and kids over 3 years old. Mittens for Detroit sells these to fund the purchase of new, warm, durable mittens and gloves, either at events or on an Etsy store that will open later this summer. Your minimum donation of $10 for a small bear or $15 for a larger bear will warm children's hands in Detroit this winter! Thank you!
Please note: These bears are not meant for young children due to small parts. They are meant for older children, teens, and adults.
