Recently our team at Homeward Trails received the devastating news that our foster, friend, and founder of Barks of Hope in Puerto Rico, Leo has recurring breast cancer. Leo will undergo surgery as part of her treatment which will require her to leave her home and rescue compound to spend the next month in San Juan, more than 2 hours away. She is frightened for herself and the dogs and stressed about getting them all safe. We are desperate to help her find placement for the dogs in her care before then.
There are 15 remaining dogs and HT is working with fellow rescues here to get them all safe, which requires a flight and long van transport from Miami. We have secured places for 11 of them and are working on the last few. As our own Virginia shelters remain full and euthanizing for space, we will not put our partner shelters on the back burner but we MUST help Leo and her dogs and give her the peace of mind she deserves as she tackles this awful health journey.
Sir Duke, Effy and Nadia are three of the dogs HT has selected to take into our program THIS WEEK and we can only make that happen with your help! We MUST raise the funds to get them here and we've JUST found out that poor Sir Duke is heartworm positive, meaning we also need to raise the funds to cover his expensive, lifesaving treatment. Leo has spent years dedicating herself to animal rescue and now during this extremely difficult time, all she is asking is to know her animals will be taken care of. Please help us get these sweet pups on a transport so we can give Leo some piece of mind.
These sweet dogs have already endured more than most will ever imagine - from life on the streets fighting for food and water, to rescue and now facing an unknown future once again. PLEASE - help us find them homes and love and give them the safety they deserve.
