Mia Self: Play It Forward with NCTC 2023

This year I'm Playing It Forward for the North Carolina Theatre Conference, specifically the NCTC Theatre Admin Intensive. The Intensive is a day-long event for junior and senior college students, early- to mid-career arts administrators, and all theatre staff interested in exploring administration as a career or growing their skills.

This program is a highly collaborative event with managing and artistic directors, development personnel, and other theatre administrators joining Angie Hays, NCTC's Executive Director, to explore this work at various professional theaters around the state. I've attended several myself (I learned that I still have a ton to learn!) and have had students attend five different Intensives around the state. Everyone comes back excited and inspired!! 

I fundraise for NCTC because I have students and colleagues and alums with children in public school who need the grant writers and community development folks and arts advocates to keep theatre structures intact, funds available, and policy in place to continue creating theatre pipelines and dynamic audiences in the years ahead!  None of the students I teach at NC State are theatre majors but they all love theatre and believe, as I do, that theatre and the arts are essential to living vital, joyful lives. The way to have strong arts offerings in communities is to have strong organizational infrastructures and that means arts administrators. We get to create and enjoy great theatre because theatre administrators are committed to keeping the doors open and the lights on. And no one supports that mission better than NCTC!!
