“One of the most incredible parts of the competition is when we get to experience ocean science in a lab, on the beach or on a ship. It really sparks great conversations with other students about the ocean.”– Nate Marshal, alumni, Boise High School (ID), Salmon Bowl

Since 1998, the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) has offered high school students a unique way to learn about the ocean and environmental science while providing them with an increased understanding of our ocean and the important role it plays in climate, weather, human health, food security, and our economy.
While the heart of the NOSB is an academic competition, some ancillary activities have become trademarks of the program, such as our summer award trips which offer our winning teams unique, experiential hands-on field and laboratory experiences that enhance classroom study and build upon the knowledge they gained in preparing for the competition. Provided as prizes to reward the hard work and perseverance of the top two placing NOSB Finals Competition teams, the the trips expose students to science professionals and career opportunities while enriching and inspiring them. And with a greater appreciation for the natural world and an understanding of the challenges facing the global ocean, many students become self-driven marine stewards.
The summer award trips are typically made possible through funding from sponsors and other generous donors. However, significant reductions in federal funding in 2018 and 2019 means our budget is stretched thin and reserves are low. Currently we have no support for our summer award trips. If we are to continue providing these important experiences as prizes for the achievement of our top teams at the 2019 Finals, we need the help of our NOSB community.
Our goal is to raise $20,000 in support of two summer award trips; if $10,000 is raised we can offer one trip. Please consider making a $25 tax-deductible donation to the NOSB today (although any amount is appreciated), joining many NOSB students, families, teachers, staff, and volunteers who also pledge their support for the program. You will help us raise funds for our 2019 National Finals Competition first and second place award trips, allowing the NOSB students to deepen their appreciation for and breadth of knowledge of ocean science while helping them explore potential schooling and career opportunities.
