Wilderness within the Desert RefugeThe military wants to take total control of over 1 million acres of proposed Wilderness in the DNWR. Once the military has control of these areas, the Wilderness values will be lost forever and wildlife habitat will be irreversibly fragment and degraded.
Congress has to pass legislation resolving this issue within the next two years. We want to find a win-win solution that protects Wilderness while allowing the military to provide the defense our country needs.
Since 2016 we have...
- Reviewed the draft and final Legislative Environmental Impact Statements
- Turned out hundreds of people to the scoping meetings to show support for Wilderness
- Hired very experienced and well-connected Cassidy and Associates to lobby legislators in DC.
- The refuge provides needed habitat for the Bighorn SheepWorked to inform and engage our local, state and national partner groups, because broad national support is critical for reaching the armed service and natural resource committees which are the gatekeepers to this legislation.
- Worked with Backcountry Pictures Inc to produce two high-quality short films about the refuge.
- Helped to generate 32,000 comments opposing the expansion the NTTR. (Between our base and those connected with our state and national partners.)
From now until Congress makes a decision we will be...
- Taking elected officials out on tours of these wild places.
- Continuing to work with Cassidy and Associates to find a win-win solution.
- Creating high-quality materials to show decision makers who can't come out to these areas why they are special by bringing the desert to them.
- Creating an updated petition to show our state legislators, governor, and the congressional delegation that Nevada’s and people across the country care about this refuge.
