Giving Tuesday - Star's Fund

Star's Fund was created in honor of Star - a beautiful German Shepherd brought to the Humane Society of Burnett County as a severely injured stray. Treatment for Star required funds beyond the normal amount budgeted for typical services to include: spay and neuter, annual vaccinations, microchips, and flea and tick treatments. We appreciate all the donors that have always stepped up for Star's Fund and today we are asking for further help as Star's Fund is currently at a deficit, and we need your help to replenish the fund! Since the inception of Star's Fund in the early 2000s, more than $100,000 has been raised and spent on hundreds of animals whose injuries or illnesses required extraordinary veterinary care. Nakoma's story is one of many.

Nakoma is a young Border Collie mix who was recently found by a Burnett County Sheriff’s Deputy after being hit by a car.   The deputy quickly brought her to the Humane Society of Burnett County and she was then rushed to Grantsburg Animal Hospital.  Nakoma had multiple injuries and severe head trauma and was in shock.  The vets were not optimistic about her chances of recovery and were especially concerned about permanent neurological damage. Once she was stabilized, Nakoma was taken home by one of the HSBC kennel staff who fostered and monitored her condition, administered meds and syringe fed her food and water for several weeks.  Slowly Nakoma started to show signs of recovery and has since made a truly miraculous recovery.  Since no one stepped up to reclaim her, she is now available for adoption! In the words of her foster mom “Nakoma is an ideal candidate for a family pet, demonstrating a strong affinity for small children, cuddling, and belly rubs. Her leash walking skills are impressive, and she has mastered basic commands. Additionally, she exhibits curiosity around cats and engages with them in a friendly manner. She also interacts well with other dogs."
