Hello!  My name is Sofia and I'm 12 years old.  I have participated in Independence Gardens' programs since I was in kindergarten.  I've learned how to grow vegetables using organic practices, cook the vegetables alongside some of my favorite chefs, and more important give back to our community.  Along the way, I've learned the importance of how a balanced meal, with fruits, vegetables, protein, and grains (or a very colorful plate) can help me throughout the day.  It's so much fun learning in our community garden.  Not only am I studying math, science, nutrition, and that worms aren't so bad, it's help me understand the impact I have in the world around me!

The money we raise will go towards adding more community school gardens so other students can experience these programs.  At our school alone, over 500 kids use our garden!  We are working on a harvesting plan so we can use the fruits and vegetables in our cafeteria.  In May, the Come and Eat IT Program will sprout in elementary schools in our community!  This is where local chefs cook with students showing them how to cook with the vegetables and fruits they are growing.  I've taught my family some of these recipes.  This year, more than 2,000 students will be chopping & cooking alongside some of the best chefs in town!

Thank you for your support of Independence Gardens!   Check out all the work they are doing at www.independencegardens.org and find out how you can be a part of this great organization!
