Imagine teaching Math concepts to 125 new and eager second graders squeezed four to a bench  in a cramped and worn classroom.  Similar situations are not unusual at Tloma Primary School.

Tloma Primary School in Tanzania, Africa, has almost 800 students.  Each Kindergarten through Grade 7 classroom has between 85 and 125 students. This could be a challenging situation for even the most skilled educator.  Public schools are meant to be supported by the government, but lack of national funding often leaves them in dire need of both supplies and qualified instructors.

Many Tloma classes are being taught by dedicated individuals prepared only by a high-school education. Overcrowed classrooms,  insufficient supplies and to little time for grading papers and preparing for classes leads to burnout, less-effective teaching, and degraded education for the students.

Last year Rodrick, one of only three government-supported, university-degreed teachers at the school, passed away following an illness. The government chose not to replace him due to lack of funding, thereby increasing the workload of the remaining teachers and decreasing the educational opportunities for all Tloma students.

Tanzania has an excess of unemployed, university-educated teachers. However, most public-school headmasters do not have the funds to provide even half of the recommended $100/month compensation for qualified 'volunteer' teachers.

$20,000 would provide support for four teachers for four years. This would lighten teacher workload, reduce overall class sizes, and improve the education for all students.

Economic development efforts, such as the establishment of avocado and banana orchards and an expanding produce garden, have recently been implemented.  These are expected to generate sufficient income within the next four years to allow the school to support these or other qualified teachers after this support ends.

But.... Our eight hundred 2026 Tloma students don't have four years to wait on a better education.   They need and deserve it now.
