In April 2024, 12-year-old Beagle boy Rocket was surrendered to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC).

Upon intake at MCACC, the veterinary team observed severe proliferative lesions covering most of his external ear canals. His previous owner had noted a history of chronic, severe ear infections on the surrender form.

MCACC contacted Arizona Beagle Rescue (AZBR) for assistance with Rocket’s medical rescue and care.

During his first week in foster care, Rocket’s foster parent noticed him frequently paying attention to his ears. He appeared to be in significant discomfort and was unresponsive to commands, leading her to question whether he could hear and whether his pain was persistent.

An examination by an AZBR Partner Vet confirmed a diagnosis of Chronic Proliferative Right and Left Otitis Externa—an advanced, long-term inflammatory ear infection that had caused chronic pain and likely resulted in permanent hearing loss in both ears. Over the next few months, AZBR and their partner vet worked to treat the infections in hopes of preserving any remaining hearing. However, despite their efforts, Rocket continued to experience significant pain, and it became clear that he had likely lost hearing in both ears. After careful consideration, the decision was made to proceed with a total ear canal ablation. Rocket underwent surgery to remove both ear canals in a single procedure, ultimately relieving him of his chronic pain.

Each ear ablation came with an estimated cost of over $4,000, bringing Rocket’s total medical expenses to nearly $10,000. Without the incredible generosity of our Beagle benefactors, Rocket wouldn’t be as comfortable and happy as he is today, in the feature photo, regardless of his deafness. Rocket is fully healed from his dual ablation and will soon be added to the adoptable list, where he’ll have the chance to meet his furever family.

Beagles like Rocket rely on the kindness of compassionate individuals who can spare a few dollars to help. Every $5 donated to AZBR goes directly toward the medical and dental care of every Beagle we take in, ensuring they receive the treatment and second chance they deserve.

Won’t you consider donating today in honor of Rocket and all the medically needy Beagles that AZBR has saved—and will continue to save? Your support makes a life-changing difference, and we are truly grateful for you!
