Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance (GBLA) is dedicated to promoting social change and justice by providing high-quality legal services to Kern County's low-income and elderly communities. Since 1968, GBLA has strived to represent those who are unable or too afraid to speak for themselves due to racial, economic, social, or legal barriers. We take pride in providing a range of services to the community, including domestic violence, guardianships, health and public benefits, housing discrimination, landlord-tenant matters, and senior legal matters.
Every day, we help our most vulnerable neighbors navigate complex legal challenges -whether it’s protecting families from eviction, preventing discrimination in housing, securing vital healthcare, helping individuals and families access and retain public benefits to support basic living needs, assisting caregivers with guardianships, or defending vulnerable victims of elder abuse or domestic violence. For many, we are their last line of defense against injustice or impediments to accessing essential services.
Know that you are not just donating to another nonprofit, but rather you are standing up for someone who could not stand alone. You gave hope to that grandmother seeking guardianship. You gave strength to a veteran fighting for benefits. You gave dignity to a single mother navigating the legal system alone.
It helps preserve essential programs at risk of being reduced or eliminated and strengthens our advocacy for those with nowhere else to turn. Because of you, someone who walks through our doors tomorrow in despair can leave with hope and renewed strength.
So, let’s leave here not just inspired, but committed. Committed to a future where justice is not a privilege, but a promise. Where every person, regardless of age or circumstance, has someone in their corner fighting for justice.
