Kimbilio means “safe haven” in Swahili. We are a community of writers and scholars committed to developing, empowering and sustaining fiction writers from the African diaspora and their stories. Our work continues thanks to our generous donors.

Founded in 2012 at SMU, Kimbilio has grown into a robust community of over 220 Fellows. Over the past 14 years, Kimbilio has held 14 retreats and numerous workshops, panels, and readings both at home in St. Louis and across the country. Learn more about our journey in our recent interview with City Corner.

As many of our Fellows already know, Kimbilio makes a lasting impact on a writer's life. A 2025 Fellow writes, "This week, I learned that Kimbilio is a forever kind of thing if you choose to make it so. And I choose it. I choose it because the love, the joy, and the tenderness I felt this week was like no other.” We hope you will help us continue Kimbilio's rich legacy!
