At Realms, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Students step into forests, rivers, and local communities to explore, question, and make an impact. They partner with local organizations, complete environmental studies, and contribute through service projects that teach real-world responsibility.
Here are some testimonials from our 7th Grade Pegasus Crew:
“When we do fieldwork, I can get a higher education by actually going out and learning directly. I like how fieldwork brings us all together and helps us build community and character. We can make the 6th graders feel welcome and feel like they belong at Confluence. It’s a much better environment to learn, and it's awesome to be out directly learning.”
-Tanner R.
“When we get brought out to the field at Ryan Ranch I immediately feel like I begin to create a connection with the nature around me and the people helping me. It pushes me to be my best self and try new things. This is why I enjoy fieldwork because it can show you and the people around you how as a team we can do great things. I feel a great sense of belonging when I am outside in the field with my friends working through problems and having a great time.”
- Ryker L.
“Confluence was very meaningful to me because I feel like instead of belonging in a classroom, I feel like I can do that in nature. When at fieldwork, I feel the same when I learn in the field and out in nature, instead of just being told about content, I get to experience it in real life. Like I wrote in my solitude and reflection. Fieldwork has let me feel like I can have fun and work at the same time."
- Lola B.
“When we go to confluence it helps us get to know everyone at our school and help build a community where we can trust people, be ourselves, and just feel a sense of belonging. With field work we get to go out and experience the things we are learning and get a deeper understanding while still working with our friends. As a result of these experiences, we get to walk down the hall and know everyone and not feel scared of people judging us.”
- Eisley P.
“When I do fieldwork, I get to be myself in the community and find the place and people I belong to. Going out and doing more fieldwork helps me get out of the classroom, learn, and see more things you wouldn’t be able to in a normal classroom. I like being outside and being interactive with my learning instead of sitting in class.”
- Skyler H.
“On field work at Ryan ranch I can learn from experience and not just be told how to do the work, it is also easier to focus and learn because there are less distractions. I also learned a lot about Ryan ranch for example, it used to be used to graze cattle. And it was dry and not a wetland.”
- Reese A.
“Confluence was a meaningful experience, because I was able to make a connection with my peers and I felt a sense of belonging. While we are out there on fieldwork I always am learning something new either about my peers or about the environment. It really helps me when once a year we are able to have a great experience.”
- Abigail. R
“When I was a sixth grader, at the beginning of the year, I felt nervous and alone, but at Confluence all of the different grades got a chance to connect and it really gave me a sense of belonging. One way I have grown from confluence is being more open to working with other people, not just my friend group or people who I know well.”
- Gage. R
“Sitting in nature, learning about rivers, trees, etc. It works. We learn by hand, inside of the real environment, instead of tests, you test what you are learning. You don’t wait for it to happen, you get the thing, and test it.”
- Jacob. B
“The thing I like most about field work is the wildlife, it's amazing to be able to go and just experience it. I also love how every time I go there I just learn so much in one day.”
- Rayzer O.
“Field work is great because we get to build even more connections in a different community, not just school but outdoors as well, it also gives us more opportunities to learn and even sometimes makes it a little bit more fun. Because in school we get to take a break from school and just be outdoors. It helps teach me how to be in the present moment and enjoy all of the pretty views and scenery around us.”
- Lexi. E
“Confluence was meaningful for me because that’s how I met many people who I would now consider my friend, without confluence I wouldn’t have known any of the 8th graders names but now, because of confluence I know all of them.
Being at Ryan Ranch this fall has given me the opportunity to learn more about how places change over distance and time. We learned about how much this land has changed, with an area becoming too dangerous to explore anymore because of dead trees having the threat of falling at transect 1. We also saw how much land can change only over a few feet, going from really dry to water within a few meters.”
