It all started with a pair of earrings! In my senior year of college, I attended the Work to Win volunteer tabling event, for volunteers to connect with organizations. I was the president of the Buffalo Community Laboratory at the time and graduating soon, so I wanted to set up and build relationships between organizations and the club for after I left.
I went up to the Justice for Migrant Families table, and spoke to Holly and Gary for quite some time, and in speaking to them, I saw how passionate they were about the work. I put my name on the newsletter and noticed they had a pair of earrings for sale too, handmade in El Salvador. I bought the earrings and wore them practically every single day.
Around the time of the 2024 election, I remember feeling so hopeless, but I didn't wish to continue to feel that. I wanted to do something tangible and make an impact. I applied for an open board position. I remember talking to Holly about how active the board was, and most members being very hands on. I wanted to do whatever I could to stay connected to the amazing work JFMF does and further the mission.
I am the youngest board member currently, and I say this to say that age does not equal impact. Hopelessness is the enemy of progress because there is always something that can be done. Be a part of this work! Donate your time, donate your skills, donate your money, donate dignity.
For my birthday this year, I want to raise $1,000. Donate $2.30, $23, or $230 for my 23rd! Please join in making my birthday wish come true <3
