Turning Fear into Hope for Moms & Babies Around the World
Our daughter, Lucy Dair, would be 12 years old today had we received the proactive care we needed during my first high risk, Kell sensitized pregnancy. Lucy was stillborn after suffering severe hemolytic anemia and fetal hydrops caused by HDFN (hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn).
Over 160,000 infants worldwide lose their lives to HDFN, and even more suffer lifelong disabilities. Although rare and complex, HDFN (when a mother’s blood creates antibodies that attack her baby’s red blood cells) is a largely preventable, treatable condition that should leave patients with no long term effects when properly managed.
Lucy's younger siblings, Nora, Callum and August also experienced severe HDFN but received expert care from Dr. Ken Moise, Dr. Thomas Trevett and their incredible teams. All three siblings are completely healthy today and are writing their Christmas lists as we begin to decorate for the upcoming holidays. On Christmas Eve their stockings will be filled with chocolate, toys, art supplies and games, but Lucy's won't. With your help, Lucy's stocking CAN be full this Christmas, but it will be filled with gifts that far outlast chocolate and toys:
-Life saving prevention and care for babies at risk for HDFN
-Education and support for newly diagnosed mothers
-Advanced research to prevent stillbirth and infant death caused by alloimmunization and HDFN
-Crucial blood tests for mothers in low resource areas
-Hope for families around the world
When you contribute to Lucy's Stocking Fundraiser, your donation goes directly to The Allo Hope Foundation, the longest running 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working globally to end preventable stillbirth and infant death caused by HDFN. Your name is then written on a card and placed in Lucy's stocking as a tangible representation of the safety, provision, and hope your donation will bring to other families facing the same diagnosis.
Instead of reminding us of her absence on Christmas morning, Lucy's stocking has become a beautiful symbol of how one child’s life, however brief or hard-fought, continues to impact others and make the world safer for babies yet to come. Just as importantly, you become part of a global tapestry of people stepping up to protect the most vulnerable patients and change heartache into hope for so many families.
As a mother, there is no greater gift than knowing my daughter’s life continues to protect others. Thank you for remembering Lucy this Christmas and helping prevent other families from experiencing such devastating loss. Because of your generosity, fewer stockings will hang empty next year.
From our family to yours, we wish you a hopeful and peaceful holiday season.
-Bethany Weathersby and Family
